Rehab In Review |
| A Letter from Jim Schaum, President / CEO: 2006 Annual Meeting Recaps a Successful Year for the Rehab |
![]() The Rehab Center held its 2006 annual meeting on November 1, 2007. There were approximately 130 people in attendance. This was the first year that we tried our new format and time with a dinner meeting which was held at the Life Celebration Banquet Center. It has been a great working relationship with the Wappner Family. They have been a major help in preparing the video and taking pictures for capital campaign promotional materials. The Rehab Center recognized Jack Butler for his assistance with the Christmas floats; Toni Vesper of Embarq for her dedication to the Deaf Community in assuring that they have the phone equipment they need; and Brenda Phillips of the DeWald Center for the joint effort put forth for the children's program at the DeWald Center. The Mansfield Municipal Court Probation Department was recognized for their work with New Beginnings and Richard Taylor and Taylor Metal were recognized for their ongoing support of Progress Industries. Dr Mei Chew Lai was recognized for his work over the last ten years as Medical Director. The Jesse Seymour Award was given to Ruth and Douglas Baumberger for their efforts in helping their twin grandsons get the therapy they needed, while Denise Stryker of the Mansfield Municipal Court Probation Officer was awarded the Frannie Carto Award for her work with persons with addictions. The President's Award went
to Mayor Lydia Reid for her ongoing support of The Rehab Center. In
addition to always being there when assistance was needed, she is one of
the founders of New Beginnings. Phillip L. Wisdom was inducted posthumously into The Rehab Center Hall of Fame. As President of Mansfield Hospital (Med Central) he was instrumental in the founding of the Crippled Children's Society which later became The Rehab Center. His wife Marion and son Philip accepted the award on his behalf. The following employees were recognized for having anniversaries during 2007: 5 years: Dottie Karst, Annie Yeater and Ken Harvey; 10 years: Pam Smith, Susan Lehr, Vernon Burky, Paul Voelker & Ernie Weaver; 15 years: Velma Anderson, Stacy Shoup and Noah Fraley; 20 years: Tammy Link and Wendy Page; and 35 years: Linda Linn. Duffy Carto was recognized for two and a half years of excellent leadership as Board Chair. New board members appointed to begin terms in 2008 were Mayor Lydia Reid, Lisa Cooper, and Mick Rupp. Barb Miller, Kathy Daniels, Pamela Roussey, Phillip Wisdom and Bruce Cummins were each elected to an additional term. The new officers for 2008 are Kathy Daniels, Chair; Don Plotts, Vice Chair; Kim Hildreth, Secretary; and Jim Henry, Treasurer. We were pleased to report that The Rehab Center had a positive bottom line of $102,000 in 2006, after donations and interest earnings. The Board of Trustees made the decision to move forward with a $3,000,000 Capital Campaign and Amy Howe was hired as Vice President of Development. In 2007 The Rehab Center completed the CARF accreditation survey and received a 3 year accreditation. The Dream Team was recruited to help Chair Chan Stevens lead the Capital Campaign. The campaign was kicked off in July with over 25% of the goal pledged. As The Rehab Center moves
forward we must do a better job of advising the community that we treat,
not only the indigent population, but all individuals eligible to receive
services. In asking the public to look at our services and select us as
their provider of choice, I want to continue my pledge to assure that the
services provided at The Rehab Center will equal or surpass those services
provided any place else. Jim Schaum, President Marion Wisdom and Philip (Flip) Wisdom (pictured above) accepts The Rehab Center's Hall of Fame award on behalf of the late Phillip L. Wisdom. |

Linda Reed, Medical Rehabilitation Director - Get to Know Us Better: Medical Rehab Division Offers Hope for People with Autism |
|
The Rehab Center has a long history of responding to the growing and changing needs of our community. As new community challenges have been identified, divisions have expanded to add additional services in response. Even The Rehab Center’s founding division, Medical Rehabilitation, continues to undergo development. Though probably treating (undiagnosed) autistic children for years, the recent upsurge of autism diagnoses has continued to change and shape therapies offered by the Medical Rehabilitation Division. Autism: A Growing Riddle Much has been made of the increase in Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) in recent years. Experts are at odds as to whether increased diagnoses are due to a higher incidence of the disorder, or a greater awareness of it. The truth probably lies somewhere in between. No casual relationships have been established, though theories abound, and the actual cause of autism remains a mystery. But that doesn’t mean that the diagnosis remains bleak. With more research has come better therapies and, now more than ever, the prognosis for those with autism or ASD is filled with the possibility for progress and growth.
All experts and therapists agree on one factor for improved success of an Autism/ASD diagnosis: early intervention. As there is no specific test for Autism, the diagnosis is considered subjective and may be given based on a medical exam, health history, family history or – most frequently – a combination of the three. Neurologists, Psychologists and Developmental Pediatricians may all weigh in during the process. Once a diagnosis is suspected, it is imperative that a child with Autism receive Speech, Sensory and Occupational Therapy immediately. Luckily for residents of North Central Ohio, The Rehab Center had been offering these therapies to children for decades, and those with Autism were able to receive life changing treatment without delay. Once referred to The Rehab Center, children diagnosed with Autism or an ASD are given developmental assessments and enrolled in the appropriate therapies. Parents are made active participants in the treatment process and are encouraged to observe and participate. Children are seen one or two times a week in a small group setting and parents are offered supportive therapy as well. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) is one treatment method that is used by The Rehab Center. In ABA, children are given individualized treatment plans which move them from mastery of simple to more complex tasks. Positive reinforcers are used to encourage the child to maintain progress. Therapists make use of floor time with clients, as well as using the “TEECH Program” which is a multi-disciplinary approach to a developmentally individualized curriculum. Money: Continues to Be a Barrier Autism therapy is comprehensive and that makes it expensive – both for the client and the provider. Some insurance companies are still refusing coverage, which means that families often must reach deep into their pockets to pay for critically important therapies. Because The Rehab Center offers therapy on a sliding fee scale, this may mean The Rehab Center absorbs a higher proportion of the costs. Additionally, therapy treatment programs can be very expensive and with research on ASDs continuing to shed new light on the condition, the necessity to purchase new treatment programs is likely. Contributions made through annual fundraisers like the Telethon will help benefit families struggling to afford treatment, while contributions to the Capital Campaign will help to ensure that The Rehab Center can afford to purchase equipment, if necessary, to continue to respond to the needs of the community. Amy Howe, Vice President - Fund Development: Campaign Update- On Track for Meeting Its Goal |
Six
months into the Rehab Renewal Campaign, I am pleased to announce that we
are halfway to our goal. More than $1,500,000 has been raised by the Dream
Team, our network of volunteers, and staff. This puts us right on target
for this point in the Capital Campaign.
In my first year as Vice President of Fund Development, I have experienced first hand just how instrumental The Rehab's volunteers are to the organization and its success. True to this rich history, it has been the involvement and dedication of our volunteers which has spurred the campaign's success so far and will ensure that we reach our goal. What has impressed me the most since becoming a part of the community, is the level of involvement not only of our veteran volunteers - the individuals who helped found the organization and their children who stayed involved, but also the participation of the third generation - the twenty and thirty year olds. In a time when all we hear about is an apathetic youth, my experience has been that the commitment of our service area's young people is strong and their willingness to help is obvious. These "newbies" have been working alongside the old hands, creating a dynamic and spirited campaign. I have to admit that one
of my favorite parts of the campaign, so far, has been watching the
interaction between the new recruits and the long-time volunteers. The result is a dynamic campaign with people from diverse backgrounds all working together for the same: to ensure The Rehab Center maintains its presence in all the communities it serves, not only for those less fortunate who cannot afford services and do not have another place to go, but also for those who do have insurance coverage and chose The Rehab Canter because of the excellent staff who deliver quality services close to "home". We don't want you to be
left out. If you'd like to "join our army of volunteers", please call our
Fund Development Office at 419-756-1133 or visit our website at www.therehabcenter.org for
additional information and to learn how to become involved. There is an
important place in our community for The Rehab Center. And there is an
important place at The Rehab Center for our
volunteers! |
| Chan Stevens: The Rehab Center’s most committed Chairman! |
|
Chan’s involvement with The Rehab began with the “Crippled Children’s Society” more than 40 years ago when he was among those who recognized the community’s need for rehabilitative and therapeutic services. He was Chairman of the 1968 campaign to locate Progress Industries at its former Distl Avenue location, and came to our aid as Chairman again in 1973 when funds were needed to build our present building at Sterkel Boulevard. It didn’t take much convincing to show Chan the need for the current campaign to renovate the building and update equipment: “The Rehab Center has always been very fiscally responsible,” he explains. “But we have always given precedence to providing services to the community and that means that funds have not always been available for updates and improvements.” It was easy for him to see the need for the Rehab Renewal Campaign. Together, Chan and Amy came up with the concept for the “Dream Team” leadership committee and have raised more than $1.5 million toward the $3,000,000 goal. If you had told Chan Stevens 30 years ago that his commitment to the Crippled Children’s Society would take him through three capital campaigns and see it change into the “Rehabilitation Services of North Central Ohio” of today, he might not have believed you. But in fact his commitment to The Rehab Center and the services it offers area residents has kept him involved through just such growth. Characteristically, Chan remains humble about his contribution: “I don’t know that I’ve done anything for The Rehab Center that someone else wouldn’t or couldn’t do. But I’ve been pleased to help out such a worthy cause. And I think that with the successful completion of this campaign, we’ll see the community’s need for services met well into the future.” Thanks Chan for your continuing support! Your commitment and hard work have put us well on the way to meeting our important goal! |

| The 2008 Telethon was a great
success, taking us just $4,600 shy of our $86,500 goal. Contributions can
still be made to help us make up the shortfall - please help us reach our
goal! All Telethon donations directly support The Rehab Center's programs
and services. This is separate from our Capital Campaign, as it benefits
clients directly through our annual operating fund.
